Đáp: Gặp Cal Poly vào ngày 18/9/2026.
With the third set tied at 24-23 and Stanford holding set point, most young teams would have given the ball to their star and prayed. Arizona State did the opposite: it kept spreading the offense across three hitters, trusted a freshman setter, and finished the set with 22 kills. The win was not built on one star; it was built on structure.
In the San Luis Obispo Classic, a non-conference event in NCAA Division I, No. 12-ranked Arizona State swept No. 8 Stanford 25-19, 25-21, 26-24. It was the Sun Devils' fourth ranked win of the season. Stanford, meanwhile, suffered its third loss in four matches, exposing a fragile, single-point-dependent attack.
Arizona State's balanced attack was the core difference. Aniya Clinton led with 15 kills at a .522 hitting percentage, while Noemie Glover and Una Vajagic each added more than 14 kills. Three simultaneous scoring threats force the opposing block to cover multiple zones, making defensive reads far more difficult. Setter Elle Mottola recorded a career-high 45 assists, her second 40-plus match of the season. The Sun Devils also added 12 total blocks, winning points directly at the net.
Stanford's Jordyn Harvey posted a match-high 18 kills at an efficient .455, yet it was not enough. In Set 1, Arizona State out-killed Stanford 15-10. Whenever Harvey rotated to the back row or was double-blocked, the Cardinal had no reliable second option. Stanford's attack became predictable, and its No. 8 ranking now looks more like past reputation than current form.
The deciding factor was Set 3. Stanford led 24-23, but Arizona State responded with composure, scored 22 kills in the set, and closed 26-24. That ability to finish under pressure separates structured teams from emotionally fragile ones.
Arizona State's rise is no fluke. Head coach JJ Van Niel has 20 ranked wins in four seasons, including six over top-10 opponents. Last season the Sun Devils set a program record with eight ranked wins; this season they already have four in just four matches. Summer transfer Una Vajagic from Wisconsin has 124 kills and has fit seamlessly into the system.
Still, caution is needed. Arizona State opened the Snyder-Park Classic with a loss to unranked UC Davis, showing a consistency gap. The two leading scorers, Clinton and Glover, accounted for roughly 48 percent of the documented scoring total, which means balance is relative rather than absolute. There is also a data inconsistency in the original report: the combined 31.5 of 65 points figure does not align with the 76 points implied by the set scores. That number should be checked against the official NCAA box score before being reused.
The real test comes Friday, Sept. 18, against Cal Poly. If the Sun Devils follow up a statement win with a focused performance against a lesser opponent, their season will be defined by consistency. If not, the Stanford sweep will remain just one brilliant night. The rising power has shown its ceiling; now it must prove its floor.
